Tinnitus (hearing noises not caused by an external source) is remarkably common. It is often described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing or other noise, and is not usually the sign of anything serious. It is commonly associated with noise trauma, linked to some medications, and can be in-conjunction with a hearing loss and/or balance problems. It can also be linked to stress, anxiety and depression, so important to stay calm and relaxed, and not to focus on the tinnitus itself. There are plenty of self-help options available via the official British Tinnitus Association (BTA) website.
